Saturday Soapbox: Living Sculptures - the aesthetics & history of Bonsai

Bonsai reflect the heart of traditional Japanese culture, especially Zen Buddhism and the spiritual concept of 'wabi-sabi' - finding beauty in imperfection and age. Bonsai horticulturalists draw on a rich tradition of symbolism to communicate ideas and emotions, particularly valuing age, balance, harmony, and simplicity.

John Eastment of the Sakura Bonsai Gallery (North Dorrigo) will provide an introduction to the history, aesthetics, and techniques of Bonsai. Drawing on more than 40 years experience, John will guide you into a deeper appreciation of the Bonsai on display at Waterfall Way Gallery. Entry by donation.
